The best means of transportation for arrival and departure

A cruise is always a special experience. Choosing the right means of transportation is particularly important to ensure that you arrive relaxed at the port of departure. Ideally, this will not only save you money, but also give you a pleasant start to your well-deserved holiday.

Especially if the port of departure/destination is further away, such as the Caribbean, Asia, America, etc., the arrival/departure can be expensive if you book the suggested packages offered by the travel companies.

That’s why we’ve come up with a few alternative ways to get there and back.

By plane

Indispensable for exotic or distant ports: e.g. Miami, Dubai, Singapore, or Cape Town.

Advantages:

  • Fast over long distances
  • Shipping companies often offer flight packages with transfers and luggage service
  • Cover for flight delays if booked via the shipping company

Tip: Arrive a day or two early to reduce jet lag and avoid delays. Many cruisers also treat themselves to a mini city trip in advance.

By car

Perfect for cruises from Germany, northern Italy or the Netherlands.

Advantages:

  • Baggage limit? What is it?
  • You travel at your pace
  • Car parks, often directly at the terminal or accessible by shuttle

Tip: Book a car park with a shuttle service in advance — it’s often cheaper and less stressful!

By train

Ideal for departures from German or European harbours such as Hamburg, Kiel, Warnemünde, or even Venice and Barcelona.

  • Stress-free journey without traffic jams
  • Railway stations, often close to the cruise terminal
  • Environmentally friendly

Tip: Take advantage of the “train-to-ship” offer from many shipping companies (e.g., AIDA, TUI Cruises), where the train journey is included and you get guaranteed connections!

By long-distance coach
